The extension building, which was built in the House's garden, was completed in 2014. It represents a significant milestone in the history of Whitworth House and the Trust's mission to support young women in Cambridge.
The Friends of Whitworth House raised £128,000 towards funding the extension, thanks to an incredible Appeal campaign led by Chairwoman Sarah Martin, which was officially launched in November 2010.
The extension houses two 'moving-on' flats, which are separate from the shared hostel accommodation offered within the House. These flats provide a vital stepping stone for residents who are ready to begin living more independently but still benefit from the support network of Whitworth House.
Each flat has a spacious kitchen, living, and dining area, a bedroom, and a bathroom. They also each have their own front door, which allows the residents some privacy and independence — an important part of preparing for life beyond the House.
The extension building was designed to be in keeping with the style of the original house, ensuring it blends seamlessly with the existing property and its surroundings on Chesterton Road.
