The future's bright at Whitworth

After a long period of deep uncertainty, the Trust is overjoyed to announce that Orwell Housing's recent bid has been successful and Cambridgeshire County Council have awarded them the contract to continue running Whitworth House as a hostel for young women.

This is wonderful news for the residents, for the staff, and for everyone who has campaigned tirelessly to keep the House open. For a time, the future of Whitworth House was genuinely in doubt, and the possibility of closure weighed heavily on all of us.

The Trust is delighted for the residents and is confident that Orwell's vision for the House keeps alive what we have always prioritised: safe, supportive housing for young, vulnerable women in a female-only setting with excellent, tailored support.

We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who campaigned to keep Whitworth House open. From residents' petitions to our then Chair Ruth Jackson appearing on local television, from councillors writing letters to cake bakers holding fundraisers — so many individuals, churches, and community groups lent their support in creative and powerful ways.

Orwell's belief in the House's unique value and the vital work it does in our area has carried us to this much brighter future. Their commitment to the residents and to the spirit of the House gives us great confidence for the years ahead.

The Trust continues to offer support to residents as they build their futures — funding essentials, providing opportunities, and championing the cause of vulnerable young women in Cambridge.

We are always happy to hear from those who would like to support us. Every gift, however small, makes a difference. Thank you for standing with us through the uncertainty — and for celebrating this new chapter.
