Providing Support for the Residents of Whitworth House
NEW SKILLS
While young women are resident in Whitworth House, they are encouraged to acquire new skills, and to undertake training that will better equip them for living independently and fruitfully. For many years the Trust has sought to support residents with the costs associated with such training – be it academic or vocational – like travel fares, fees for field trips, art materials, work clothes and computer equipment. In partnership with the Cambridge Soroptimists, we have also funded cooking lessons for the residents.
BUILDING COMMUNITY
We also have funds available for social activities within the House and out of it.
These might include BBQs in the garden, pizza evenings, cinema trips, and bonfire nights.
MAKING THE HOUSE A HOME
We help provide items for the house, with the aim of making the place feel more like a home and less like a hostel.
We fund the cost of a WiFi connection in the House.
DREAMS INTO REALITY
We supply the House with a general kitty, so that individual needs of the residents can be met as they arise. Examples of how this kitty might come in handy includes: helping with the cost of moving on into unfurnished accommodation by providing essential household items; helping with legal costs; assisting a resident prepare to become a new mother; helping a resident purchase camping equipment, as she worked towards her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award; purchasing a new bike. The women are encouraged to apply from small grants from the kitty to help with such matters.
