The Whitworth Trust takes its name from its link with Whitworth House – a hostel that for over 25 years has provided supported residential accommodation for vulnerable, precariously-housed young women in Cambridge. Whitworth House was officially opened in May 1998, and since 2000 has been managed by Orwell Housing. It can be home to up to 15 residents, all aged between 16 and 25.
As a charitable trust (charity commission no. 1091682), and previously named 'The Friends of Whitworth House', the Whitworth Trust has for many years been able to offer financial support to the young residents of the hostel, who can apply to us for grants. This support has included help with access to education and training through transport and equipment costs. We also give welcome packs of bedding and linen and provide wellbeing activities. The extension to the House was supported by large donations from the Trust, completed in 2014.
A major part of the Trust's funds are also used to help vulnerable, precariously housed and homeless women in Cambridge more generally, including women of any stage of life, with children or without. To this end, the Trust has given grants to support projects and initiatives run by partner organisations, including Jimmy's Cambridge, Cambridge Aid, Cambridge Women's Aid, and the Cambridge Churches Homelessness Project (CCHP).
