The Business of Moving On
The Friends of Whitworth House would be very pleased to hear from landlords and potential landlords, who might be willing to offer move-on accommodation for residents of Whitworth House. As you may imagine, the task of leaving the House a is a critical point in the lives of residents. It is extremely difficult to find affordable housing in Cambridge, and especially hard for young single people with no capital. Residents have huge hurdles to cross before they can be properly settled in a job with a roof over their heads, and agency fees etc. will be beyond their resources in most instances.
With these things in mind, we hope to gather a list of people and sources who might be able to offer suitable accommodation for these young women. Residents would have detailed character references from the staff at Whitworth House, who will have worked with them to this point. And in some instances, the Friends’ Committee may be able to vouch for them financially, in order to give them a head start (this works on a case-by-case basis, dependent on particular circumstances). Do please contact us if you have any suggestions in this regard or would like to discuss the possibility further.
The Friends would also welcome any offers of suitable employment, or suggestions regarding full-time / part-time positions for residents of the House. In some instances, securing employment would be the key to residents moving on and finding alternative accommodation.
